The return will be the culmination of a years-long process to repair relations between the NBA and China after commissioner Adam Silver and the league supported then-Houston general manager Daryl Morey`s posting a social media image endorsing the Hong Kong protests in October 2019.
The rift led to the loss of lucrative sponsorship deals and a temporary ban on NBA games from combo predictions being broadcast on Chinese television in 2019, costing the league hundreds of millions of dollars in subsequent seasons.
ESPN sources said the relationship has improved in the past few years, thanks in large part to NBA China CEO Michael Ma, who was hired in 2020.
