combo tips The UK House of Lords criticized the actions of the new FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem.

Autosport published a letter sent to bin Sulayem, authored by Paul Scriven, a life peer of the House of Lords from the Liberal Democrats.

In the letter, Lord Scriven explains that he was one of 90 lawmakers who wrote to the FIA in March 2022 to express their concerns about the implications of holding the Formula One Grand Prix in the Gulf region, where human rights abuses regularly occur.

After Scriven did not receive any response from bin Sulayem, he decided to raise the topic again:

Almost a year has passed since you received this letter. And since then we have not received any response from you. Your failure to respond to our serious concerns about the situation is deeply discourteous and unprofessional.

Why do you think you can afford to ignore parliamentarians? Do you think that, together with the FIA, problems related to human rights violations can be resolved? We have written to you to express concerns that are in the public interest and we expect openness and transparency from the FIA.

To be clear, I continue to expect your response to your letter dated March 16, 2022, and am releasing this letter publicly to protect the interests of the public.

The letter also raises concerns about the FIA`s recent ban on drivers making political statements that have not been agreed upon in advance:

I have learned with concern of the FIA`s decision to suppress possible statements by Formula 1 drivers on the topics of what you called political statements. Deciding to pursue a policy that would shield certain Formula 1 Grand Prix host countries from public scrutiny of instances of injustice.

It is clear to me that this policy is primarily aimed at Sir Lewis Hamilton, your most outspoken and courageous racing driver, whose comments on the situation in countries with appalling human rights records would no doubt be poorly received by the corrupt and brutal regimes of those countries.
